The Jacket: Dead but dreaming?

Sunday, March 20, 2011 5:01 AM By dwi

On the surface, The Jacket appears to be a One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-style psychological thriller.  But it might meet be a time-traveling churchlike meditation on the afterlife, more along the lines of Jacob's Ladder.

Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) is parcel discover a community during the Gulf War when a child soldier shoots him in the head. Returning to Vermont in 1992, he suffers from bouts of amnesia, peregrination aimlessly along a road until he happens upon a drunk blackamoor and her daughter. After serving them both, he hitches a mate with a suspicious character that ends up existence intense news. Before Starks knows it, he's been shot erst again with a bullet to the head.  That's digit bullets to the nous for those of you reckoning at home.

Starks is indicted for murder but his amnesia leaves him bereft of a logical thought or much of a defense.  He is instead sworn to a mental hospital where Dr. Thomas Becker (Kris Kristofferson) regularly terrorizes slummy Starks by patch him in a straightforward crown (hence the name) and mixture him in a morgue drawer. Makes sense, right?

While inside the drawer, Starks begins to hallucinate â€" or, depending on your perspective, instance travel â€" and he encounters people who look oddly old from his instance life. Throughout the dreamy, ofttimes garbled scenes of The Jacket, actors exhibit up in assorted roles to keep us guessing.

Unfortunately, The Jacket is a dreamy theory of flashes: backwards, forwards, and sideways. Depending on your interpretation, Starks is actually instance traveling, experiencing a effort of the soul, or only employed through his issues before he dies. While the movie proscribes to every these possibilities (there are multiple endings on the DVD), they are a program of unsatisfying choices.  Each of them punishes the viewer for finance instance in the film.

SPOILER JACKET:  If Starks is hallucinating, the flick has no effect at every because null matters.  If Starks is instance traveling, the  movie becomes an exercise in absurdity in which he's impact not once, not twice, but three nowadays in the head; more given for a Three Stooges episode. If Starks is dead (my preferred ending), then it's doable that he's not actually influencing anyone but merely employed his way through limbo. It diminishes his selfless acts, which are finally rattling most action himself.

The Jacket tries to keep viewers guessing by making every doable success the "right" one, but ends up leaving everybody unsatisfied.
