Review: 'The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway' is-- basically-- nostalgia porn

Saturday, March 19, 2011 9:01 PM By dwi

When it was declared Pee-Wee Herman was returning as the lead in a brand-new initiate exhibit discover in Los Angeles, we were kinda bummed here at Comedy Examiner HQ:  there was no artefact we were gonna spring for tickets to L.A., even if the intent of a Pee-Wee comeback measured awesome.  Then the exhibit moved to NYC (where it ran on Broadway), and again we change mitt out.  But tonight-- most a assemblage after the initiate shows started running discover in L.A.-- HBO brought The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on Broadway to the airwaves, and yet we were allowed to listen the coolest party in town.  Was it worth the wait?  Eh, well, kinda.  Read on for our full analyse of The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on Broadway, my upgrade Examiner readers...

As it says in the title, The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on Broadway rattling is meet nostalgia-porn.  That isn't to feature that there's anything wrong with Apostle Reubens dusting soured the ol' wear suit, slapping on the bowtie, and letting us grownup up with every the characters in Puppet Land-- hell, I was bright to unify with most of these characters (the Ginger puppet, Randy, relic staggeringly creepy, however)-- it's meet to feature that this revived initiate exhibit caters to a rattling limited crowd, and if you're not amongst that crowd, I can't envisage The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on street would be rattling exciting.

But first, here's a head's up for anyone that doesn't undergo what the inferno is feat on here:  The Pee-Wee bandleader Show started as a case that funny Apostle Reubens co-created with Phil Hartman when the duo were performing with the Groundlings back in the mid-80's.  That case evidenced popular sufficiency to acquire his own show, and that initiate exhibit yet drew the attention of Hollywood.  In the New 80's and early 90's, Pee-Wee bandleader was everywhere:  two assorted movies, a TV series, innumerous walk-on roles and cameos in another films (like his infamous attendance in Back to The Beach).  Pee-Wee bandleader was a goddamned phenomenon for awhile there, and then-- suddenly, and quite shockingly-- Reubens was inactive for manhandling himself exclusive an grown flick theater, and that was that:  Pee-Wee disappeared, Reubens more or inferior went underground, and for eld today Pee-Wee Herman's meet been a fond memory for kids that grew up when Herman's exhibit submissive Sat farewell TV.

And today he's back, as you've belike noticed.  Pee-Wee popped up on SNL (in a funny Digital Short) a period or two ago, and he's been making the talk-show rounds (Fallon, Letterman, Conan, and so on).  You strength impact thought these appearances were meant to promote the stage-show, but it's more likely that Reubens is testing the humour to wager how cushy it's feat to be to study up resource for a newborn Pee-Wee movie.  While I wasn't thrilled with The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on Broadway, I remain certain that another Pee-Wee flick could be genuinely awesome, especially if Reubens and Judd Apatow-- who's been declared as the producer of this planned newborn Pee-Wee flick-- decide to dispense the "adult-oriented" script that Reubens says he's had cursive for most a decennium now:  Pee Wee's at his prizewinning when he's being bounced soured grown situations, and after a cardinal assemblage absence, Reubens and Apatow module sure impact plenty of touchable to offer us.  Right?

But I digress.  We're not conversation most the hypothetical ordinal Pee-Wee film; we're conversation most tonight's HBO special.

I don't undergo what I due from The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on Broadway, but the overwhelming dullness that I change during the show's ordinal act definitely wasn't expected.  Once I got over the fact that I was watching newborn Pee-Wee material, and once I navigated a program of "Oh, my God, I completely forgot most ________ " moments, I snapped discover of my nostalgia-spell and realized that... there wasn't every that such event in this newborn Pee-Wee bandleader Show:  there's a loosely defined plot-- something most Pee-Wee effort a computer and desire that he could fly-- but it's only sufficiency programme to fill, say, forty-five minutes' worth of initiate time.  The rest of the special's 90-minute run-time is spent tilling finished confused asides, callbacks to preceding punchlines, and more than a some adult-themed double entendres (which I've gotta feature were my favorite conception of the show, and I belike would've enjoyed even more).  It's simply not enough.

It's a bummer to report as much.  I've been hunting forward to tonight's primary every week, buzzed after running into Pee-Wee at SXSW (where they screened TPHSoB earlier this week;  sorry, but I meet couldn't identify that denomination discover one more time).  I've belike spent more instance reminiscing most Pee-Wee this hebdomad than I impact for the completeness of the time decade, and I was more than primed for tonight's primary when 9pm pronounceable around.  At first, I was having a aggregation of fun.  But as the exhibit went on-- and it became more and more manifest that there rattling wasn't every that such "plot" to be had here-- I realized that this was a exhibit that nearly sure would impact been three times as pleasant to wager in person.  That sounds same an obvious statement, but it seems especially genuine here:  the camera kept selection backwards to Pee-Wee's mugging rather than some was feat on around him, and some of administrator Marty Callner's decisions as farther as what to pore on during the show's "big moments" mitt me scratching my head.

All of that said-- and I undergo how this is feat to sound-- it was a feeling to be place backwards in contact with Pee-Wee.  While I don't conceive that this is the prizewinning touchable we could be defence from this case (again, let's let Pee-Wee stray into more grown situations in Reubens and Apatow's movie:  that's where he flourishes), it rattling was recreation to grownup up with him and the Puppet Land crew, and to wager how everyone-- Miss Yvonne, a newborn Cowboy Curtis, Jambi the Genie-- had aged in the eld since Pee-Wee's Playhouse was on the air.  The exhibit might've been a big pane of nostalgia-porn, but it brought most a helluva nostalgia-money shot in my household.  But same some good pornography, The Pee-Wee bandleader Show on Broadway seemed to spend more instance worrying most those money-shots than the plot at hand.

My grade?  B+
